How Pre-Stretching Works?

A pre-stretch roller (or pair of primary/secondary rollers) is a key component of pallet wrapping machines that stretches plastic film before its application on the load. This step prepares the film for optimal wrapping, ensuring that each layer adheres correctly to the pallet and products.

Using a pre-stretch roller offers several advantages:

Cost Reduction: By pre-stretching the film, up to 50% less material is needed to secure each pallet, directly reducing your consumable costs.

Enhanced Stability: Stretched film has an "elastic memory" that allows it to continuously tighten, ensuring perfect load retention during transport.

Operational Efficiency: A controlled stretching process reduces film breaks and machine stops, improving overall productivity of your packaging line.

Optimal Protection: Uniform and tight film application protects the load against dust, humidity and scratches.

The pre-stretching process

The pre-stretch process is a precise mechanical operation that takes place inside the wrapping carriage. It works using a system of two rollers: the primary (feed) roller, which pulls the blank film from the reel, and the secondary (pre-stretch) roller, which rotates at a higher surface speed.

This difference in speed between the two rollers stretches the film in a controlled manner before it even wraps around the load. This process activates the film's “elastic memory,” improves its strength, and significantly reduces material consumption.

Manufacturing Expertise & Custom Engineering

At Elastomont, we go beyond standard supply. With over 20 years of manufacturing expertise, we engineer solutions that optimize the efficiency of your packaging line.

Complete Pre-Stretch System Fabrication

We manufacture both critical components of the pre-stretch carriage ensuring perfect synchronization:

  • Primary Roller (Feed Roll): Designed with high-tack rubber to pull film smoothly from the supply roll without slippage.
  • Secondary Roller (Stretch Roll): Engineered to spin at a higher velocity. The precise balance and friction coefficient between these two rollers are crucial for maintaining the target stretch percentage (e.g., 200%, 250%, or 300%) without snapping the film.

Advanced Customization Options

  • Custom Durometers: We adjust the rubber hardness (Shore A) to balance grip vs. wear life based on your film type.
  • Modified Diameters: We can machine rollers to oversized or undersized diameters to fine-tune the pre-stretch ratio effectively.
  • Core Fabrication: Custom machining of Steel or Aluminum cores for obsolete or specialized machines.
  • Special compounds: Oil-resistant formulations and high-performance applications
  • Specialized adaptation: We also modify the rollers to adapt to specialized equipment such as stretch netting.

Industrial Applications & Key Sectors

Our high-performance pre-stretch rollers are the backbone of packaging lines across critical sectors, ensuring loads arrive safely:

Manufacturing & Production:

  • Essential for pallet unitization of finished goods, providing a tight, secure seal that protects products against moisture, dust, and environmental contamination before shipment.

Warehousing & 3PL Logistics:

  • Critical for high-volume wrapping operations. Our durable rollers maintain consistent pre-stretch ratios, minimizing film cost-per-pallet and maximizing daily throughput.

Distribution Centers:

  • Focused on load stability and safety. A perfectly wrapped pallet prevents shifting during transit, significantly reducing product damage claims and rejected deliveries.

Frequently Asked Questions: Pre-Stretch Rollers

A pre-stretch roller is a precision-coated component (usually in pairs) that mechanically stretches the film between two points before applying it to the pallet. By spinning the secondary roller faster than the primary, it elongates the film (typically 200% to 300%). This process reduces film consumption by up to 50% and increases load stability.
Film breakage is the #1 sign of worn rollers. If the polyurethane surface is glazed, cut, or worn down, it loses its "tack" (grip). This causes the film to slip, altering the pre-stretch ratio and causing snaps. We solve this by recovering your rollers with a high-grip, cut-resistant Polyurethane that restores traction immediately.
Yes. We manufacture and stock direct replacements that meet or exceed OEM specifications for major brands like Wulftec, Lantech, Orion, Robopac, and Cousins. We use OEM part numbers (cross-reference) to ensure perfect compatibility with your carriage.
Absolutely. You don't need to buy expensive new assemblies. Send us your worn aluminum or steel cores. We strip the old rubber, inspect the bearings, and re-cover them with fresh high-performance Polyurethane. It is a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to buying new.
We use a proprietary High-Grip Polyurethane specifically formulated for pre-stretch applications. Unlike standard black rubber, our compound offers superior cut resistance against sharp film edges and maintains its "tacky" surface longer, preventing slippage even at high speeds (high RPM).
Inspect them for:
  • 1) Deep cuts or nicks in the surface.
  • 2) Glazing (shiny, smooth spots) where the film slips.
  • 3) Diameter reduction (wear), which changes the gear ratio and reduces your film savings.
If you see these signs, it's time to swap them out to stop wasting money on film.
Yes. While we stock standard 20" and 30" rollers, we can manufacture custom dimensions on demand. We can adjust the coating thickness to modify the diameter, effectively "fine-tuning" your pre-stretch ratio (e.g., increasing diameter to get more stretch).
For standard items in stock, we offer same-day pickup at our Quebec facility or next-day shipping to Montreal, Toronto, and the US. For custom recovering (refurbishing), our turnaround is fast, with Emergency Rush Services available to minimize your production downtime.
It is technically possible, but we strongly recommend replacing them in pairs. Since the two rollers work together to create a precise differential speed (gear ratio), mixing a new high-grip roller with an old worn one causes uneven tension, leading to film breakage and inconsistent wrapping.
Yes, provided the mandrel length matches. Our standard rollers accommodate the most common film widths (20-inch and 30-inch carriages). We verify the "face length" to ensure full film coverage.
